Upholding the Cause of Education: The Night Study Centres Committee

It is only education that empowers you to conquer the beast of poverty and other social evils. In keeping with this reality, the Night Study Centers Committee has been making a big difference. In partnership with the Bombay YMCA, the Committee provides night study shelters across Bombay for those lesser privileged and in need of resources to support their education and studying. Set up in 1964 under the Presidentship of Rtn. Sorab Godrej, the night study centres provide students in need with an appropriate atmosphere for self-study, supported by volunteers. Eleven Night Study Centers currently cater to over 400 children (210 boys and It was a matter of great pride and delight when The Rotary Club of Bombay joined hands, in women’s solidarity, with the International Women’s Association (IWA) for the noble initiative of a charitable clinic for women and children.

The Clinic was inaugurated by our President, Dr. Sonya Mehta on the 22nd noon of October. Says Rtn. Bimal Mehta, Chairperson of the Night Studies Center Committee, “We aim to provide an environment which is safe and conducive for the children to study. We try to make it a holistic experience for them by providing tutors, and as of this year, we have also started a nutritional program. We look forward to increasing the participation of Rotarians and Rotaractors in our efforts.” The Night Study Center Committee has been at the helm of numerous success stories and also boasts of students who top the tenth and twelfth year board exams.
