SUSEGAD, MY NEW WAY OF LIFE

‘Susegad’ – which comes from the Portuguese word ‘sossegado’ for quiet – refers to the relaxed, laid-back attitude of Goans, who seem to live in a perennial state of contentment.

Perhaps in these troubled times one needs to take a slice out of the Goan notebook and learn the subtle art of de-stressing.

Because of the WFH or ‘work from home’ norm, boundaries are often blurred when it comes to logging off from our work
and logging in to a casual mode.

A typical household has three or four Zoom meetings taking place in different corners around the house with ‘virtual backdrops’ of anything from Spiderman to a sunset, to camouflage the chaos behind that seemingly benign smile!

But in Goa it’s different; life moves at a leisurely pace as I discovered from the conversation I had with a close friend who just visited a week ago.

Instagramable pictures of the Coco Shambala villas with drool-worthy meals and awe-inspiring sunsets made working
from home take on a whole new meaning.

Suddenly, in that surrounding, it all made sense – the new normal is actually the old way of life where a slower pace and less ambition resulted in a greater degree of happiness and a higher EQ.

As we speak I’m thinking of jumping in the car and dashing down to Susegad land for some feni, fish curry rice and fun times! Adeus Amigos…
