AY Ends Jan On A High Note

On January 28th, 2021, Ananda Yaan (a senior citizen activity centre in association with Dignity Foundation) celebrated Makar Sankranti, and Haldi Kumkum at both centers. Makar Sankranti is the first festival of the Hindu calendar, based on the position of the sun. It is believed that gifting anything around the time of Makar Sankranti is auspicious and akin to receiving grace from the Divine.

Haldi Kumkum is a tradition that comes with Makar Sankranti from the Peshwa time. It is a women-centric social gathering where married women dress up, meet other women, friends, and relatives, have fun, singing, dancing, and praying for their husbands. This event used to make women free from daily work, family tensions, and other negative thoughts. Knowing the benefits of the celebration of Makar Sankranti and Haldi Kumkum we, at AY, celebrated this event in an inclusive way. We did not restrict it to married women but made it open for where all male and female members, who came dressed in their finery.

Money was collected to distribute gifts for everyone. Snacks and sweets were provided, members played traditional games, folk songs, danced, and enjoyed their time together. They shared happiness and positivity through this event.
