Environmental agenda drawn up

After their excellent start last year installing solar lights at the museum, the Environment Committee is gearing up for an innovative and busy year. The Committee, chaired by Jagdish Malkani and Alok Sekhsaria, has spent the last month studying various projects to prioritise and develop their plan of action. Its ambitious plans include the following:

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) Museum

•Solar power phases 2/3/4. Phase 1 was recently completed;
•Organise 2/3 environmental expert speakers jointly with CSMVS at their premises.

Bombay Port Trust (BPT)
•Work with Ayala, an Israeli company specialising in sewage disposal/rainwater harvesting, for the cleaning of Sassoon Dock and/or Gateway of India;
•Maintenance of the Colaba garden on an ongoing basis.

Asiatic Library

Water harvesting and greening of the two gardens in front of this historic building.

Horniman Circle

Replacing the existing lights with solar-powered street lights and providing solar lights for the students’ study centre.

Welfare for Stray Dogs (NGO)

Planning and implementation of sewage disposal at their Parel premises.

At Talwada

Water harvesting to augment water resources at the HTEC, the ADMC, the Taparia Junior College and the Ashramshala. Much of the spadework has already been done but there is a need for members to step forward and help with overseeing these projects.

Here is the chance for all those of us who complain about the city to actually make a positive, lasting impact.
