THE CITY’S GREEN MUSEUM

I spent a delightful Sunday morning under the shade of 100-year-old trees and amidst the cool and verdant surroundings of a heritage precinct.

We were at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS Museum) which I still like to think of as the Prince of Wales Museum, the last bastion of culture, heritage and the glory of days gone by.

As we discussed the importance of art and culture in our lives today, Dr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the Director General of this autonomous body, spoke of how his passion for promoting the arts had enthused the city into supporting this great heritage.

With the goodwill and generosity of institutions that support the arts and culture, he was able to create an interactive space that enlivens the city with joy!

As we discussed how our Club could continue to be part of such an important social initiative, Rtn. Priyasri Patodia, the Chair of our Urban Heritage Committee, bubbled with fresh ideas.

We spoke of how our work with the Asiatic library and the restoration of old maps could become part of the museum’s centenary celebrations, planned for 2022.

I left with a feeling that this cultural movement in our city needs to be supported and preserved.

Of how contemporary society needs the understanding of Indian and global culture to preserve and enrich the community.

Of finding ways to support a centre that brings joy peace and contemplation to the soul of the city.
