THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so?
It came without ribbons. It came without tags.
It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ‘till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before.
What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store?
What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?”
How The Grinch Stole Christmas is perhaps the most accurate account of Christmas as we are reminded through his journey of how Christmas is not just about exchanging gifts, but about gathering with family and friends and rejoicing the life we have.
It is also not just about enjoying Christmas in the comfort of our homes – it is a time to give back to society, especially to those less fortunate than we are. While this year the festivities we normally see all around our city were sorely missing, our spirit continued to soar and our endeavours to bring comfort to our bretherin did not diminish.
And the spirit of fellowship was just as strong, as this year too our Club members attend the Christmas Fellowship with enthusiasm. It was so wonderful to see all of us dressed in our Sunday best, singing and swaying away to carols, foot tapping and some even dancing to the merry tunes of yesteryear and also attentively listing to our favourite bartender mixing and twisting up our favourite cocktails. A very merry time was had by all.
The last few days of this most unusual year are now upon us and as we look back to the catastrophes that nature threw at us – in her own way to maybe re-boot the planet – mankind stood tall and not only weathered the storm, but ensured that we forgot our perceived differences and worked hand-in-hand to support one another and to make sure that the coming year brings back normalcy in both body and spirit.
I now look forward to the beginning of the new decade with hope and compassion in my heart and with strength and determination in my mind to do whatever it takes to work towards keeping us happy and healthy!
