Stories For Lighthouse

Many fairy tales begin with ‘Once upon a time’. This popular beginning was used for a series of story sessions conducted for Lighthouse students recently.

The sessions were the outcome of online workshops conducted by Ms. Jayshri Murali previously, to help teachers hone their storytelling skills.

The sessions began with the KG tots listening attentively as the teacher Ms. Priyanka narrated the lively tale of The Little Blue Truck. As part of the post- reading activity, the little ones were shown how to draw a simple motor car. The Drawing Game, a story about shapes, was selected for classes 1 and 2. The teacher Ms. Anuradha started the session by reciting poems on shapes to build interest. After the story, each child was encouraged to design his/ her own shape rocket and decorate it with crumpled balls of coloured paper. What Happened to the Shawl?, a thought-provoking tale, was selected for the oldest students aged 8-11. As part of the pre-reading activity, children were encouraged to display and talk about a recycled item they had at home. The youngsters listened with interest as teacher Ms. Ivaz narrated the tale and, at the end, it was clear the students had absorbed the concept of recycling and its importance in today’s world. The session concluded with a tutorial on creating a gift bag using old newspaper.

A big thanks to our co-ordinator Ms. Manisha Ahuja, who has worked silently in the background doing everything – from scheduling teacher workshops to guiding the teachers – to ensuring that sessions functioned smoothly without a hitch.
