Third Annual Table Tennis Tournament

Skill and enthusiasm was on show as 23 Rotarians and kin turned up for our Club’s Third Annual Table Tennis Tournament held, as before, at the YMCA at Colaba.

Jamshyd Vazifdar explained the format, stressing that it had been tweaked based on experience from the last two years, in an attempt to make it more fair and enjoyable to all.

Participants were paired up and divided into two groups of 5 pairs of players each, and each group would follow a League Format, with each pair, as ‘teams’, playing the others within the group. Group A, led by President Nominee Framroze Mehta consisted of 5 pairs: Framroze and Rajesh Shah, Manan Jain (son of Mohit) and Jamshed Banaji, Anand Dalal and Kirit Kamdar, Jaymin Jhaveri and Anuj Arenja, Aliakbar Merchant and Moy Biswas. Group B, led by President Ramesh also consisted of 5 pairs: VivekHimatsingka and Yajjat Sekhsaria (son of Alok), Mohit Jain and Pranay Kamdar (son of Kirit), Nowroze Vazifdar and Hiren Kara, Avyaraj (nephew of Anuj) and Rahil Shah, Mehul Sampat and Hrishit (nephew of Mehul).

After each pair had played the others in the group, League tables were formed based on points won. In Group A the pair of Jamshed & Manan brushed aside all challengers as they took the number-1 spot with 4 wins out of 4 games. Second place went to the pair of Anand & Kirit. In Group B, the teams were much harder to separate, as 3 pairs finished on the same number of points. To settle this, head-to-head record and number of points won per game were considered, and the number-1 spot went to Vivek & Yajjat, and second place to Mohit & Pranay. The pair of Mehul & Hrishit narrowly missed out on a chance to progress.

The next phase of the tournament saw the pair of Anand & Kirit face off against Mohit & Pranay in the “3rd place match”. This was won by Anand & Kirit.

The overall winners were decided in the match where Group A winners Jamshed & Manan played Group B winners Vivek & Yajjat. This thrilling best-of-three match saw Jamshed & Manan as the eventual winners.

President Ramesh graciously presented the trophies, which Moy had taken considerable pains over, as he does year after year for all the Sports events. Jamshyd thanked PP Paul George for facilitating the use of the YMCA and Rtn Vita Dani for loaning the racquets and balls. Thanks were also given to the Sports Committee, President Ramesh and all the participants, who then extended their fellowship over light refreshments.
