Supporting Art Deco Mumbai Trust in bringing out a Handbook on The Swastik Court
‘Repair and Restoration: Let’s Talk about Mumbai’s Modern Heritage’, a presentation on Swastik Court by Atul Kumar, Founder Trustee, Art Deco Mumbai, followed by a conversation between architects Vikas Dilawari, Robert Stephens, and Atul. As part of the ongoing initiatives of The Urban Heritage Committee, The Rotary Club of Bombay has supported Art Deco Mumbai Trust in bringing out a Handbook on The Swastik Court . This was through a contribution raised out of the corpus of a Fundraiser held in August 2022 by the Urban Heritage Committee.
The book was launched, followed by a presentation and interaction with the attendees at two venues one at the Tuesday meeting of Rotary on 10th January 2023 and one at the recently concluded Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2023 at the Asiatic Library.
Atul Kumar, Founder Trustee of Art Deco Mumbai, a not-for-profit charitable Trust, shared that the handbook would not have been possible without the support of our club.
Art Deco Mumbai Trust is the only online public domain repository showcasing research, building inventories, and photo documentation dedicated to Mumbai’s Art Deco architecture. The advocacy and outreach initiatives have successfully sensitized all citizens to our city’s rich modern living heritage.
ADMT has ensured that the Art Deco style is synonymous with Mumbai’s modern history and put the city’s Art Deco on the global map. The Trust has He has worked actively on civic issues, particularly pertaining to the protection of open spaces, heritage conservation of south Mumbai’s Art Deco precinct, and its nomination to UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Atul will address us on the repair and restoration work carried out on Swastik Court, a residential-style Art Deco building that represents Bombay’s distinctly modern ways of living. Situated within the historic core of The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, a 2018 UNESCO World Heritage Site.
