Cuffe Parade Sees Green

Miyawaki is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, that helps build dense, native forests. The approach is supposed to ensure that plant growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual. It involves planting dozens of native species in the same area, and becomes maintenancefree after the first three years.

Nestled in a shaded corner of the CPRA (Cuffe Parade Residents Association) Greens, a garden in Cuffe Parade, is the newly planted Urban Forest and Nakshatra garden.

The latest community project of the Rotary Club of Bombay, this urban forest has about a thousand trees (41 varieties of local trees) planted using the fabled Miyawaki technique. Planting is completed, with drip irrigation.

The Nakshatra garden has 27 trees representing the 27 stars. It is hoped that this garden will be a new lung of Cuffe Parade, attracting mores butterflies, bees, birds and giving out more oxygen for the residents of this area.

The project was inaugurated on Sunday, August 29th, 2021 by Chief Guest Vijay Balamwar, Dy Commissioner BMC.

Speaking at the inauguration RCB President Shernaz Vakil and CPRA President Aditi Jain recalled the contribution RCB had made to community projects in the area. These include the solar installation and the Pet bottle pelletisation machine as well as the Lighthouse project in Machchimar Nagar.

President Shernaz said the forest, which was implemented by the Environment Committee of the RCB, was very laudable.
Committee Chairperson Varsha Daiya proposed a vote of thanks.
