Now into its fourth year, the Club’s Annual Table Tennis Tournament generated great enthusiasm among Rotarians and kin. Twenty-two participants were cheered on by seven Rotarians.

Proceedings were kicked off by Jamshyd Vazifdar explaining the format, after which participants were paired up and divided into two groups. Each group would follow a League Format, with each pair, as ‘teams’, playing others within the group.

Group A consisted of five pairs: Mahesh Khubchandani and Sanjiv Mehra, Rajeev Narvekar and Jaidev Merchant, SK Mitra and Yajjat Sekhsaria (son of Rtn. Alok Sekhsaria), Mehernosh Dotivala and his nephew Homyar, Vivek Himatsingka and Hiren Kara.

Group B consisted of six pairs: Anand Dalal and Dilip Dalal, Jamshed Banaji and Gautam Doshi, Pritam Sanghai and Peshwan Jehangir, Delna Vazifdar and Vasudha Shah, Aashish Contractor and Bimal Mehta, Rahil Shah and Raj Ajmera.

After each pair played others in the group, League tables were formed based on points won. In Group A, top spot went to the pair of Rajeev and Jaidev, who won all four of four games played.

The second-placed team was harder to determine, as three pairs had finished with the same number of points. To settle this, a head-to-head record and number of points won per game were considered, and the number 2 spot went to Mahesh and Sanjiv.

In Group B, the results were simpler: the pair of Jamshed and Gautam brushed aside all challengers as they took the number 1 spot with five wins in five games. Second place went to Raj and Rahil.

The next phase of the tournament saw Mahesh and Sanjiv face off against Raj and Rahil for third place. This was won by Raj and Rahil.

The overall winners were decided with Group A winners Rajeev and Jaidev playing Group B winners Jamshed and Gautam. This thrilling match saw Jamshed and Gautam emerge as the eventual winners.

While Moy Biswas, Jamshyd and Satyan Israni from the Sports Committee were busy organising the tournament and didn’t play, there were many non-players who lent their support from the sidelines: Preeti Mehta, Ravi Fotedar, Rajesh Shah and Sherebanu Baldiwala.

Trophies were given away by Moy, Director, Sports Committee, Sanjiv (Chairman) and Jamshyd. Jamshyd thanked Paul George for facilitating the use of the YMCA and Vita Dani for loaning racquets and balls.

Thanks to the Sports Committee and participants who then continued their fellowship over light refreshments.

RCB’s Annual Table Tennis Tournament was held on May 5th, 2019 at YMCA Colaba. Members’ children and par tners joined in the sporting event.
