Kids enjoy Jules Verne-themed summer camp

 In Bhavishya Yaan, Education

This summer, 40 students from GK Marg were introduced to the Father of Sci-Fi, Jules Verne, and his best-known work Around the World in 80 Days. We set off on a nine-day adventurous summer camp starting on April 8th, 2019 and ending with a grand finale on April 16th, 2019 with lots of fun, laughter and learning.

The main objectives:

  • Learn about the bet that causes the character’s journey.
  • Summarise the main characters’ journey and identify the locations that the main characters visit.
  • Understand the novel’s ending.
  • Explore and express their learnings and creativity.
  • To develop life skills like perseverance, value of time and problem solving.

The approach and activities:

Many concepts and key vocabulary were pre-taught to equip students so that they may comprehend the story better. While reading the book, the learning was brought to life with many hands-on activities like making means of transport, time-line of transport, route map, country profile along with videos, worksheets, games and quizzes.

The grand finale:
On April16th, the students confidently made presentations on key concepts learned, shared their findings on a country from the story and did a book review by answering questions and sharing the values and skills learnt from the book. As a follow-up activity, they were handed self-made scrap books which they will complete and share, once the school reopens.

What they had to say about the camp:
“Time is money” – Aniruddh, Grade 7
“I learned that when we move east to west, we profit one day” – Sahil, Grade 8
“I learned so many things and had fun too” – Sneha, Grade 7
“Teacher, I bet with my friend and I won it” – Adarsh, Grade 5
“Try and try till you win” – Govind, Grade 6
