Plans to strengthen the Night Study Centres

 In Education

The Rotary Club of Bombay in partnership with the YMCA is involved and invested in the successful management of six Night Study Centres with a total of 11 classrooms across the city. Classrooms within municipal schools, post school hours, make for a clean and safe environment for the children to come and study. Each classroom is overseen by a moderator who ensures that the environment remains conducive for studying. Students from all standards are welcome at these centres. Over the last several years the Club’s Partner in Service, the YMCA, has played the primary role in ensuring successful results for all Night Study Centre students.

Last year, many of them even topped the SSC examination. This year, under President Dr. Sonya Mehta’s leadership, the Club has resolved to strengthen the programme. Chairpersons Bimal Mehta and Shernaz Vakil have ambitious plans. One of their many focus areas is to provide students assistance with English and with their homework. Plans to strengthen the Night Study Centres As a pilot project, the Rotaractors of Jai Hind College have taken ownership of the Night Study Centre at Agripada where over thirty-five municipal school students study. The Jai Hind Rotaractors visit twice a week and stay for the duration that the centre remains open.

They are very enthused about their task and this is what they have to say: “Keep trying till you succeed is the first feeling we got upon entering the school. The students to whom we were introduced were full of life and enthusiasm. Not to forget their desire to learn. Students from Sr. Kg to 10th standard and even college students are all present. Seeing their energy level and their determination, we ourselves got motivation to teach them. “The experience till now has been great. The kids are fast learners and are coping up quite well. We have started the very basics of English grammar with them and are now teaching them how to pronounce different words. It’s great to see them learn, thus gaining confidence,” the students add.
